Certified Birth Doula, CD(DONA)
Yoga Instructor, RYT200
Vanessa taught high school Spanish in the Bronx for 6 years before giving birth to her first son and leaving the school classroom. As a full-time mom, she found she had more space and time to ask herself what she really wanted to do. After some reflection, she decided that her experience as a classroom teacher and passion for yoga could be combined. She began practicing yoga in 2004, as a performer at Skidmore College. And after 10 years of personal practice, it was a natural next step to be trained as a yoga instructor. She received 200 hours of yoga teacher training at Sacred Rivers Yoga in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Vanessa's first job as a yoga instructor was with Yogi Beans Kids' Yoga Studio where she received additional training on teaching yoga to children and taught several different age groups of energetic, young yogis and yoginis. Vanessa has also worked with teens and adults of varying abilities in class settings and privately. She has taught prenatal and postnatal yoga and has brought yoga, meditation, and reiki to mental health workshops. In 2015, Vanessa received training in reiki level 1 from a reiki master at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.
As a new mother, Vanessa’s need for support grew and she craved a parenting community that would not shy away from discussing intimate and painful issues. As a parenting writer and blogger, Vanessa has given voice to many of the issues she is passionate about and encourages others to discuss the complex ways parenting challenges us. And with the parenting support groups, we create a parenting community for ourselves that is supportive and enriching.
Vanessa was very empowered by the births of each of her three children. She feels passionate about supporting families through this momentous life event. In 2017, Vanessa completed training with Your Best Birth (A DONA International Workshop) and began practicing as a birth doula. She believes that birth preparation is parenting preparation and she is very excited to help others make the most of their birth experiences as they lay a foundation for the parenting they will embark upon.
