Certified Birth Doula, CD(DONA)
Yoga Instructor, RYT200
Hi, I’m Vanessa. I am a mother of three and recent Tucson transplant from New Jersey. My journey towards birth work began when I watched The Business of Being Born one night during my mid-twenties. I was blown away. At the time, I didn't even know midwives were a thing of the present. A few years later, I took Bradley birth classes to prepare for the birth of my first child. After one difficult unmedicated hospital birth, a second beautiful home birth, and a few friends asking me to attend their births, I felt called to be trained as a doula.
As a doula I have supported clients with varying needs. I have held hands, tied up hair, squeezed hips and nips, and I have learned from each birth experience. Because of my own unmedicated birth experience I feel passion about supporting birthing people who want to find out what their bodies were made to do.
I was surprised by the parts of myself that emerged as I wrestled with my motherhood identity in the early years of my first son’s life. My need for connection grew and I longed for a parenting community that would not shy away from discussing the intimate and painful challenges of parenting life. I found myself bringing together informal groups of mothers in the living rooms of all the homes I have lived. I love opening my home and my heart to hold space for connected mothering.
I became a yoga instructor when I was pregnant with my second child. I taught children’s and prenatal yoga through two pregnancies and two postpartum recoveries. I find that yoga compliments my work as a doula because I am able to help womxn work with labor through breath, meditation, and movement. Yoga helped me connect with my unborn babies as well as reconnect with my body’s power after childbirth.
I believe that birth preparation is parenting preparation and I am very excited to help others make the most of their birth experiences as they lay a foundation for the parenting they will embark upon.
